Pineapple Green with Matcha Tea

Can you blend the most common tea ingredients into an uncommon blend? tried to do just that with its Pineapple Green tea.

What is Pineapple Green with Matcha Tea?

Pineapple green matcha is a truly unique blend from Tea People tea company based in the UK, made with simple ingredients that are not commonly blended together. It contains a classic gunpowder , candied pineapple bits, roasted and popped rice, Japanese matcha tea and flavouring. At the first sight, it may seem like a regular blend. In fact, all these ingredients are pretty common in the world of tea. But matching them all together is a quite unusual thing to do.

Gunpowder green tea is mostly used for green tea blends, but it’s rarely (if ever) blended with matcha. Then, there’s popped and roasted rice, and ingredient that makes genmaicha. Until recently, roasted and popped rice was never used in any other tea besides genmaicha.

There are pineapple bits too. Pineapple is a common ingredient as well, but pure pineapple blends are not that common. To round it all up, this blend was coated in Japanese matcha powder.

Tea People are a UK based tea company that gives 50% of its profits for funding education and social projects in poor tea growing regions.

Pineapple Green with Matcha smells DELICIOUS. It’s as close to a real pineapple as it can get. There’s just a light smoky undertone and a layer of green freshness. The scent is so intense you can smell it even before opening the pouch.

How to brew this tea?

We brewed this tea following instructions on the packaging – 1 teaspoon of tea leaves per cup of water for 3 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius.

Pineapple Green Matcha tea brews into a pale-yellow liquor with light pineapple scent. Because it’s coated in matcha powder, it will be slightly murky. Don’t expect the same green colour as you would get from sencha coated in matcha or even genmaicha coated in matcha – gunpowder will never be as green. Don’t over brew it though, as the colour will get much darker.

Flavour of this tea is not as intense as the scent. In fact, it’s quite light, with deep but very light smokiness, light toasty notes, green vegetal heart, and a light pineapple aftertaste.

Gunpowder teas are not everyone’s cup of tea. They can be strong, bitter, and murky even without matcha. They are commonly used for making mint tea that’s served with a lot of sugar. However, this blend is so cleverly blended that it may appeal to tea drinkers that don’t like gunpowder at all. It doesn’t need any sweetener and would make a great daily tea for tea drinkers that want to move away from strong green tea blends but are not ready to give up on flavoured blends completely.

It’s a fun and cheerful blend that is quite forgiving to brewing mistakes.

You can use it for making an tea too – just use double the amount of tea leaves and steep it together with some fresh pineapple.
