What is Marrakesh Mint tea?

Marrakesh Mint tea is a type of tea typically made with gunpowder tea, fresh spearmint leaves, and lots of sugar. It’s served in small cups and it’s strong and sweet. Typically, it’s simmered rather than brewed. The first infusion lasts only a few seconds and is discarded, both to wash the leaves and reduce bitterness. Marrakesh mint tea is usually made with spearmint, which has a sweeter and less minty flavour than peppermint. However, there are no rules when it comes to tea blends. They may include different green teas, and different types of mint, too. Tea blends are not pre-sweetened and blended to give a distinctive flavour without the need to add sugar.

What’s in Teapigs Marrakesh Mint tea?

Teapigs mint blend contains Chinese chun mee (or zhen mei) green tea, which has a similar flavour to gunpowder, but slightly fresher and sharper, with a bit more smokiness. Just like gunpowder, it also brews into a strong tea with a darker colour. Gunpowder and chun mee green teas are two of the most commonly used teas for blending. They go well with a whole range of ingredients – from floral to fruity, chocolaty and spicy.

This tea contains 76% of chunmee tea and 24% of peppermint. It’s made with loose tea leaves rather than tea dust. What does it taste like?

1. Brew it 1-2 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius if you want to drink it pure.
2. Cold brew it in the fridge – this tea is perfect for cold brewing.
3. Brew it for 3 minutes if you want to add lots of sugar or serve it iced.

Neither green tea nor mint is overpowering in this blend. When brewed traditionally with hot water, peppermint is dominating the scent of brewed tea. Flavour is quite light, slightly lighter than it would be if you used fresh mint. It’s less sharp and more sweet than fresh mint too. There’s also a dose of astringency, which is common for chunmee teas.

Mint is dominating the flavour as well, blended with smoky and mellow chunmee base notes. Because of a light astringency, Marrakesh mint tea leaves a strong sweet and refreshing minty aftertaste. If you don’t like astringent teas but want to avoid adding sugar, try cold brewing it instead.  

This tea is a good choice for tea drinkers that enjoy mint teas, but don’t mind stronger green tea flavours with a light astringency. It’s a great after meal tea if you want something more than just mint, and great if you don’t like to add sugar to tea. However, it’s also great for making iced teas. When preparing it iced, steep it slightly longer and add a sweetener, sugar or honey.

The best way to brew Teapigs Cold Brew Pink Grapefruit tea

Teapigs tea bags contain loose ingredients, rather than dust. However, they will need more time to brew, even though the particles are smaller than regular loose tea.

Recommended time for steeping this tea is 5+ minutes in cold water. When using cold water for brewing tea, always make sure you are using odourless fresh water, as cold brewed teas have a less intense scent than hot brewed teas. Using fresh will really make a difference.   

While the recommended steeping time is 5 minutes, this tea is best steeped slightly longer. If you want to intensify the flavour, you can also use a slightly hotter water and add ice, or cold-brew it overnight.

What does it taste like?

What’s in Teapigs Chai Tea?

Teapigs Chai Tea is a chai tea that’s widely available from supermarkets and online. It comes as loose tea and as loose tea in pyramid tea bags, or temples, as Teapigs call them.

Loose tea in pyramid tea bags is the same type of tea you’d use with a teapot or an infuser. It’s different from classic tea bags that contain fannings and dust, and pyramid tea bags allow enough space for leaves to fully expand.

So, what’s in this chai?

Most chai teas are blended with strong Assam tea, as it offers a perfect rich base for adding milk. Teapigs Chai tea is made with Assam black tea too, but in a CTC style. It also contains pieces of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, vanilla and natural flavourings. Cinnamon and vanilla are the main scents in this blend, which is not as common in a regular, heavily spiced masala tea.

What are CTC teas?

CTC Assam black tea is a brilliant choice for chai teas. CTC or crush-tear-curl teas have small leaves that look like tiny pellets. This style is common in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and even Vietnam. This style is used only for black tea. CTC teas usually give a stronger infusion than whole leaf which makes them perfect for making milk teas. And that includes chai too.

What does it taste like?

Tea bags are usually intended for regular brewing; however, you can simmer them too. Simmering is a great way to extract more flavour and improve the texture of chai tea. It’s a wonderful method if you plan to add a sweetener. If not, simmered tea may become too bitter, so regular brewing is a better option.

To make a cup of Teapigs chai tea, use 150 water per one tea bag. Steep for 5 minutes at 100 degrees Celsius and add a splash of milk. If you want to simmer it, use 2 tea bags per cup of water and 1/2 cup of milk and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Teapigs Chai is blended with whole spices which will naturally release less flavour when steeped then simmered. This tea is stronger on cinnamon and vanilla than other chai teas and perhaps a slightly lighter on the spices.

However, it’s great for tea drinkers that want a gentler and still slightly spiced blend. It has no bitterness and smells beautiful. This tea goes very well with milk, but because of its lightness, a splash will often be enough, depending on how you brew it.

If you love heavily spiced strong chai blends, Teapigs chai tea may be too light for you. But if you love sweet cinnamon teas that are light enough to be enjoyed with no condiments, you’ll very likely love this tea too.

Extra idea – if you want to release more flavour from cardamom and other ingredients, gentle crush the tea bag using a pestle and mortar. Be careful not to break it – crush only the spices.
